When the lights go up on Naperville’s Dancing With the Stars Fundraiser Gala, Deborah Barry—known to her friends as Debbie—will be among the inspiring local contestants. A retired nurse who spent her career caring for children, Deborah is now following a lifelong dream on the dance floor at NP Dance Studio.
A Life of Care and Dedication
For decades, Deborah devoted her career to nursing, specializing in working with children. Her compassion and service shaped her life and her legacy. Retirement offered her a new chapter—and with it, the courage to embrace something she’d always longed for: dance.
From Piano Keys to Dance Steps
Growing up, Deborah’s family practiced a strict religion where dancing was frowned upon. Instead, she was directed toward music, becoming a classical pianist. Yet the dream to dance never left her.
In April 2024, she joined NP Dance Studio and finally stepped onto the floor. That first class opened the door to a world she had once only imagined.
Why She’s Dancing
When asked why she believes she could win the Gala, Deborah’s answer was heartfelt:
“I’m dancing for all the little girls who dreamed to dance and don’t get to, and all the older girls like me who think they can’t dance. I want to show them that they can.”
Her story isn’t just about competition—it’s about hope, courage, and proving that dreams have no expiration date.
Supporting a Greater Cause
The Gala benefits Nacientes Horizons, which provides toys, groceries, and essential dental care for children in Colombia. Deborah’s nursing background makes this mission especially meaningful, as it continues her life’s work of supporting children’s health and well-being.
